History

The Lighthouse and cottages were completed in early 1856. The Lighthouse was painted a stone colour and is 24.7m high. At least 30 ships have either been wrecked or run aground on Troubridge Shoals with many more not reported.

In 1956 the Lighthouse was upgraded and the light was driven by electric motors supplied by 2 diesel generators. These generators provided power to the cottages also for the first time.  The lighthouse was now repainted in Red and White banding and could be seen for five miles away by day.

In 1981 the Lighthouse was completely automated and the lighthouse keepers and their families left Troubridge Island for the last time.

There have been many storms over the years that have done a lot of damage to the Island.  One severe storm in 1994 damaged the area around the lighthouse and cottages.  A wall was completed in 1996.  Another severe storm and king tide damaged the wall in 1999 and sandbagging in 2000 was the only option which proved successful.

We look forward to your stay.
